As a professional speaker, I have used the services of Jane Atkinson to help me improve my speaking business.  Recently, she posted a blog about being and advertiser or an expert which included a very simple exercise I would like to share:

Which do you think creates a better first impression of you was:

  1. reading your article in an industry magazine or
  2. seeing a print advertisement for your business

Which do you think would have more impact?  I vote for “1”.

Which do you think creates a better first impression of you was:

  1. seeing you speak at the convention or
  2. meeting you at your trade show booth….

which do you think would have more impact?  I vote for “1”.

Which do you think creates a better first impression of you was:

a) A client receives an article that was written by you
b) A client receives a brochure of your services

which do you think would have more impact?  Again, I vote “1”.

Be the expert

Whenever you have a choice to position yourself as an expert.  Experts draw people in.  It’s a form of ‘pull’ marketing as opposed to ‘push’ marketing.   In the real estate world they say it’s all about location, location, location.  In marketing, it’s all about position, position, position.
